Muslim Killer and Muslim Innocents

Many soldiers killed by an insane psychologist. Insane? He would have to be to do something like that. Oh, and he was a Muslim too. So now crazies all over the country are threatening mosques and individuals. Question: if he had been a Baptist would the crazies bomb churches? Of course not. We would never consider blaming innocent members of a group like that because of one sick stupid act by a Christian. So why blame every Muslim in the world for this sick stupid act? People seem to be hard-wired to hate anyone different from us. Different race, different religion, different language, different sexuality and even different sex. How the hell we ever got this far is beyond me. Probably extinction will be the ultimate answer for the “human” problem.

You know what this reminds me about? The hoopla after the Prez signed the new hate crimes legislation (making crimes based on gender or sexual orientation prosecutable as hate crimes). Folks in the Moral Minority are now going on about how this means that the feds will now be arresting ministers for preaching hate speech from the pulpit.

Without getting into whether *that* would be a good idea, it's exactly the same kind of mote-in-your-eye, beam-in-mine argument that the talking heads are plastering on Muslims (again). It's a matter of demonizing "the other" and interpreting anything "the other" does as a threat.

Here at my University, folks were actually discussing canceling events sponsored by Islamic student groups, due to the possibility of violence. (Were. More rational heads have prevailed for the time being.) Frankly, I'm far more concerned with violence from our local (heavily-armed) Pentecostals than I am about anything that the Persian Student Alliance or the campus Red Crescent society might get up to.
